Our History
Pikes Peak Agility Club (PPAC), as known as Dog Agility Pikes Peak Region (DAPPR), held its very first meeting at BowWowz’s training building on June 26, 2008. There were 7 founding members present, who are still part of the Club almost 16 years later! The Club was founded to put on agility trials in the Pikes Peak Region because of the driving distance to Denver along with the increasing group of folks interested in the sport located right in the Colorado Springs area. Currently, PPAC has 54 members.
The first trial was a NADAC trial held at Latigo Equestrian Center in January of 2009. Over the years, the club has hosted several different agility organizations, like NADAC, DOCNA, USDAA, and AKC. Primarily, the Club now focuses on the American Kennel Club (AKC) agility trials. PPAC purchased its own agility equipment in 2017 to be used at these trials. The equipment is compliant with all requirements of the sport. Currently, the club hosts 4 AKC agility trials annually.

What Is Dog Agility?
What is dog agility? It is a sport where a handler directs a dog through a pre-set obstacle course within a certain time limit. The height of the jumps range from 4” thru 24”, a measurement that is based upon the dog’s shoulder. This is to make it easy for all breeds, mixed ones too, to participate in these games! Courses typically have between 14-20 obstacles, which can include tunnels, weave poles, tire jumps, seesaws, and pause tables where dogs must stop running, and stay for a set amount of time. At each trial, the team (handler and dog) race around a unique courses designed just that day. All of this is done with your dog relying solely on the cues and body language you use to direct them on course. It’s truly a team sport designed for you and your dog…and so much fun! It is the fastest growing dog sport, not only here in the US, but worldwide, for dogs and their owners/handlers.
What Is Scent Work?
PPAC held its first Scent Work trial on June 26– 27, 2021, and is now hosting 2 trials each year. The club purchased a trailer to transport and store the club-owned scent work equipment. Scent Work is becoming a rapidly growing dog sport, and we are happy to be supporting this fun dog activity.
Fascinating fact: Dogs have a sense of smell that’s between 10,000 and 100,000 times more acute than ours! The sport of Scent Work celebrates the joy of sniffing, and asks a dog to sniff to their heart’s content, turning your dog’s favorite activity into a rewarding game. It is a terrific sport for all kinds of dogs and is a wonderful way to build confidence in a shy dog.
